Okay, so HELLOOOO Saturday! You’ve roared your Monday madness a little too soon for my taste, but oh well; I’ll move on and hope that the rest of my day gets a little less green (What? Don’t worry details to come)!

Well, although I haven’t had the best Saturday of my life, it hasn’t been the worst either. I’ll spare you the nitty gritty details of past Saturday disasters (thank you very much) and move on to what happened today!

WARNING: DISASTER IN PROGRESS!!!

Let me first start out by asking you whether or not you’ve ever heard of energybits.

Aaaaand your answer is?

Their tagline is “add more life to yours one bit at a time” (www.energybits.com) and hey, I’m all for the “nothing ventured, nothing gained” clichés of life, that’s for sure! I mean how could I possibly resist a statement so exuberantly energetic, huh?

Well (cliff notes version), my stomach couldn’t hack them and I got really sick and blah, blah, blah…blah…blaaaaah (that was the grand finale).

I felt all gross and icky and tired and…must I go on? Oh, please don’t make me because I might just get sick again!! Ugh, the horror, the horror!!!

I’M SICK!!!! AHHHHH!!! I HAVEN’T BEEN SICK IN…A LONG TIME!!!

First, let me clarify my feelings about energybits:

They are a completely phenomenal product!!!

Wait, WHAT, but I thought they made you sick?! (The readers mumble, “make up your mind already…”)

“Energybits have just ONE ingredient – organically grown NON GMO spirulina aglae- a super food endorsed by the United States and NASA as the most nutritionally dense food in the world.” (www.energybits.com)

PLUS there is no caffeine, sugar, chemicals, gluten, or soy in them!

PURE PLANT BASED GOODNESS BABY!!!

There are so many “out of this world” health benefits that go along with these tablets, like added mental and physical energy, but I digress. Instead of me boring you with anymore details, GO check out their website!! GO! GO! GO!

Alright, so I only took 5 measly tablets this morning before embarking on my journey to the gym (back day at the gym) and hey, I know what you’re thinking (I’m a mind reader after all), “5 TABELTS!!! WELL, NO WONDER YOU GOT SICK!”

Let me explain! You’re actually supposed to take 30 tablets OR MORE a day (for added health benefits) and you can even swallow 30 tablets in one sitting (or standing or whatever)! Whoa, when I found that out, I was taken aback because honestly, I’m not the biggest pill swallower (Does that make sense?).

“And in conclusion may I please remind you it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty.” (Cher, Clueless)

Hehe, sorry for the silliness, but honestly though, how many of you have ever wanted to repeat this line from the movie Clueless at the most inappropriate time possible?

…Kristin raises her hand proud…but…nobody else does… Well, at least I fulfilled my lifelong dream of embarrassing myself in front of lots and lots of bloggers!

Great job Kristin, now back on task!

Anyways, so I decided to test out 5 tablets in hopes that I’d feel some small serge of energy at the gym and then be motivated to take 25 more when I got home!!! OH YEAH!!!! Boy was I wrong!

After a great back workout and a 3.5 mile walk on the treadmill (because my calves were still sore from the race and from my 22:30 3 mile run yesterday that was actually pretty easy, but the hills caused my tender calves to tense back up), I walked inside my lovely house, drank some delicious chocolate coconut water and then made a yummy breakfast wrap (mandarin oranges, black beans, tofu, avocado, fresh squeezed lime juice)…

BUT THEN… Marc and I took Prince to the dog park AND…

POW!!!!!!!

(Insert Kristin doubled over with her head between her legs saying, “OUCH!!!” a lot and Marc getting really scared saying,” I’m taking you to the hospital.)

Honestly you guys, I was trying to be a trooper and not ruin anyone’s fun, namely Prince’s, but once the fun police arrived (flashing lights and all), a.k.a my stomach, I knew it was time to GO!

On the way home, Marc had to pull over twice so I could…well, you know, get really, really sick and embarrassingly so in front of lots of cars driving by. OMG!!!

I was crying and panting and making a whole, big scene, but at least I had a fab outfit on! It’s always a plus to look cute while revealing what you ate for breakfast to everyone! Uh, yuck!!

Once we were close to the hospital (it’s literally right across the street from our neighborhood), I started to feel a little bit better so then decided to go home and figure out what was up. Not only did I feel sick to my stomach, but my stomach muscles were so tight that I thought they’d pop right out of my skin.

Finally the pain subsided and I researched energybits and found out some startling news!!!

Spirulina can cause such reactions as fever, stomach pain, nausea, etc. especially in cases where the person is not consuming enough protein!!!

AH-HAH!!! I always figured I didn’t eat enough protein (especially being a vegetarian), so this was a huge wakeup call for me! Mind you, energybits/spirulina is 100% safe, so no harm, no foul.

On that note, DINNER TIME!!! I see lots of beans, tofu, veggie burgers, hummus, and much more in my future!!!

Have a great weekend!!!!

I’m so sorry to hear about your experience today. My first experience with spirulina came years ago as a marine fish food product. It was supposed to build the immune systems of marine fish, while caring for marine herbivores diets. There’s also Nori, which I believe is a marine macro algae. I’ve tried that and didn’t like it, so decided to stay with garden veggies instead. I hope that you’re feeling better. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!

Awe, thank you!! I am feeling much better but am not sure I will ever try it again. Spirulina is so great, but I’m not sure I’m willing to keep taking it and feeling bad until my body warms up to it.
Have a fabulous weekend and thank you so much for your well wishes!!! 🙂

Oh my gosh! What a horrible experience! I’m so sorry you had to go thru that! I hope you are feeling better now. I take a scoop of Green Vibrance (vibranthealth.com) in about 6-8 ounces of vanilla coconut milk every day. Check out the website, it might be easier for you than the tablets. 🙂 it has spirulina in it, and so much more great stuff. And definitely add some protein! 🙂

Thank you!! I’ve been a vegetarian for a while but am up and down with my meals so much that I think I’m not taking in the proper amount of protein sometimes. Thanks for the compliment, too!! 🙂

Oh wow, hope you get to feeling better! Scary stuff! I have also found that leading up to a big event (a big race, wedding, etc), your body builds up it’s immune system, but then can crash afterwards. After our first real half marathon, both my sister and I got very sick – within hours of finishing. Crazy!

    1. Kristin

Yeah, that’s very true! I was actually expecting to get sick this week (after the half), but never expected it’d be this bad! Ugh, but thank you so much for the well wishes and I hope you have a great rest of the weekend!!

Wow I’m officially terrified to try spirulina. Lol I’ve heard it’s amazing for you but I know I don’t eat enough protein either since I’ve stopped eating meat.
    I’m glad you’re better now though! 🙂

    1. Kristin

Awe, thanks so much!!! You know, I used to take a protein type powder that had spirulina in it and I was fine! It might just be the combination of spirulina + chlorella!
My husband tried the energybits, too and had no negative reaction and in fact felt pretty good! He had a boost of energy. He’s not a vegetarian though.
My mom has taken spirulina for a long time too and thinks it’s the best thing ever so it might just be my sensitive stomach and my lack of protein intake.
I love that you’re a vegetarian, too!!! Vegetarians unite!! Hehe!! 🙂

Really? Hmm that’s really strange you had a bad reaction if you’ve had it before. The whole protein thing is so hard to figure out without meat though. Especially since it’s only been maybe 2 months for me so far. However, not eating meat has turned my life completely around! I love it! I still hesitate to call myself vegetarian. I feel like I haven’t earned that title yet! Lol 🙂

      2. Kristin

Oh, you’ve definitely earned vegetarian status for sure! 2 months is great! Good for you!
I love not eating meat, too! It’s a great feeling to have such control over what I eat (or don’t eat, like meat)! 🙂

      3. jennslife22

Yes! It really does feel amazing to know the kind of control I have over my eating habits. I feel like the negative energy and stress the animal carried definitely gets carried into your body when you consume meat. I’ve had so much less stress and anxiety since I’ve stopped eating meat. I guess I can officially say since I’ve become a vegetarian :)!

      4. Kristin

Yes, you can!!! You are a fabulous vegetarian!!! 🙂
I definitely do agree with what you said, too that “the negative energy and stress the animal carried” goes into your body. That’s true!!

I’ve done the whole, “Honey pull over, PULL OVER,” puke in front of passing traffic because I was struck suddenly with the flu. Terrible at the time but funny now. People probably thought I was hungover!

    1. Kristin

Haha, I LOVE IT, my husband said the same exact thing, that people probably thought I was hungover!! That’s hilarious! And yes, the pull over, PULL OVER is exactly right + lots and lots of panic, right? That’s never fun. 🙂 Haha, thanks so much for your comment! It’s definitely something I can laugh about now! Xoxo!

Haha, yeah, I think you’re right about me never taking it again!! There are lots of professional athletes that take them and benefit from the products as well as many runners. Plus there are other kinds of bits like skinnybits, vitalitybits, and recoverybits! They’re considered superfoods but I’m not sure I want to go through the pain of nausea to get to the greener side of it all!! 😉 I know, though, 30 pills!! They are really small, though, but still it’s a lot!!

  7. 2 Cups 'N Run

Oh no!!! That must have been awful!!! I’m also not a big pill swallower, yes that makes sense to me, I always chose once-a-day multivitamins even if they have less of everything… I take my pills in the morning with my breakfast and then forget all about it, not doing it again later in the day.
So the million dollar question for you, are you trying to build up your resistance to the energybits, or are you done with them?

    1. Kristin

Xoxo!!! I always look forward to your comments!! 🙂
Haha, thank you, I’m glad someone else doesn’t enjoy swallowing pills. I’ve never been a fan. When I was younger, my parents had to go through this whole process of dissolving the pill, but ugh, long story! 🙂
My husband took a few and had no problem at all, so he’ll continue to take them, but as for me, I’m not so sure. That experience scared me into thinking (based on research) that I need to eat more protein and maybe take spirulina is a different form.
I hope you’re having a great weekend and that you’re relaxing and having a good time!! 🙂 🙂

Another blogger posted a review of the same product just a bit after you, she took the whole 30 pills (or whatever the serving is) and didn’t have any issues. Obviously not every product works for everybody, I’m sure you’ll figure out what works best for you.

      2. Kristin

Oh, that’s very interesting!! Yes, I definitely think it’s a great, great product with lots of health benefits, but just a little too much pow for my body I think! 🙂
        You’re right!!! 🙂 🙂

  8. irenejean

Sounds awful! I have an egg and dairy allergy, so I’m always looking for ways to get more protein into my diet as well (I eat meat, but am trying to eat less of it). I drink a protein shake every morning, because of my allergies I use Vegan Protein from Hammer Nutrition, it tastes great with soy milk 🙂 Hope you’re feeling better!

Oh cool, I love Hammer Nutrition products and am going to check it out right now! My husband loves all things Hammer Nutrition so thanks so much for the advice!
I love protein shakes and have tried some different protein powders so this sounds like a good one that I want to try and I love that it’s vegan, too!!
I really appreciate your comment and hope you find some great protein sources that you enjoy!!! 🙂

Yeah, it was one of those things like, oh my gosh, my husband might be right, maybe I do need to go to the hospital because of all the pain.
I’ve known several people throughout the years that have had bad stomach pains…and it ended up being something more serious, so that kept going through my mind, but everything is good now, so no worries!!

        You too!!

and also I wanted to ask you. I want to go vegetarian, (well maybe more like pescetarian because I love seafood and sushi 🙂

There is so much information out there, can you recommend a good book or website that I can look at to get started. My fear is not getting enough protein so I want to make sure I do my research!!

        Thanks!

      2. Kristin

Wow, awesome!! My husband is a pescetarian! He loves seafood! He still eats lots of tuna and salmon and such!
I really like Vegetarian Times!! Their website is: http://www.vegetariantimes.com/
I also have a Trader Joe’s right by my house and they have some great vegetarian recipes on their website:
        http://www.traderjoes.com/recipes/index.asp
I also talk to some of the workers at Trader Joe’s to get ideas and inspiration for my meals!! They have a great cookbook, too, called Cooking with Trader Joe’s Cookbook Vegetarian! It’s excellent and I use it a lot! Even if you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby, the cookbook is still awesome and their recipes on the web!
        I hope I helped some!!! 🙂

      3. Amy Christine

Great information! Thank you so much!! Going to check out those websites now!

We just got a Trader Joe’s in Tampa. Like it just opened on Friday. The lines are still around the building so I am going to way until the craziness settles down just a bit before I try to venture there.

I’ll probably have more questions for you as time goes on. Thank you again for sharing this!!

        You are awesome!

sorry you were sick but it happens to all of us. That was me at the mile 20 marker during my first marathon…yup…there went breakfast and I did the walk of shame the next six miles. I hear ya….yummy…those energy bits sounds gross. I only eat chicken and that is where I get my protein from…but I have been considering a break up with chicken…I feel gross after eating it…I have always had a sensitive stomach, but I need protein….and jealous of the long run.

Energybits are great and most people have no problems at all, but they didn’t sit well with my body, so I’ve definitely reevaluated my protein intake and actually last night designed a higher protein plan!! It took me a while to do but totally worth it! I did lots of research on vegetarian proteins so feel good to go!

      Reply

      1. Kristin

Yes, my husband always tells me I don’t get enough protein. I go through phases with my meals. For example, I stopped drinking protein shakes and I stopped eating as much tofu and veggie burgers as I was, as well as black beans, etc. I am someone that needs a day-to-day meal plan that I can follow or I get off track.

  11. Open Up Life

That was a post filled with emotions. I am glad to see that you are alright. Not that you getting sick is funny at all, but its kind of funny when we try to eat healthy and taking care of our bodies only to have our bodies reject some of the good things we are given it. When I read how many tablets you have to take, that is insane. Is that all at one time or can you take them throughout the day? I’m no expert, but it seems like you would get sick taking that many at one time. Plus you would have to equal that with the amount of protein you are ingesting. Anyway, I hope that everything works out! Have a beautiful day!

I have a hard time swallowing pills also so that is the only reason I probably won’t use them again. Although, I have the same problem you do with not eating enough protein, so I wouldn’t want to risk getting sick. What a terrible experience, I hope you are feeling better!
